Description
Our characterful 18th century french farmhouse provides the ideal self-catering holiday accommodation sleeping up to 12 people, with parking for up to 10 cars in its enclosed front courtyard, the property has a walled garden and a five acre open field behind the house with wonderful views.
The house is comfortable and warm and yet retains much of its period charm. It is only 30 minutes from either coast and is a perfect base for exploring Normandy and north-west France. There is even a professional Chef (English-speaking) in the village who can come and cook for you by arrangement.
The Manche area (Cherbourg peninsula) is an area of great beauty, often overlooked by tourists passing through on the way south. This makes it an unspoilt rural haven with abundant wildife and birdlife, beautiful uncrowded beaches (especially on the west coast opposite Jersey at Carteret), and pleasant cycling or walking. Cretteville is on the edge of the Marais, a wetland area that is a protected regional park.
The principal towns near to Cretteville are Carentan (train to Paris in 2 hours from here), Valognes, Picauville, St. Mere Eglise, Hayes Du Puits, Barneville Carteret. Cherbourg is approximately 40 minutes away.
Restaurants L’Estaminet in St Marie Du Mont near Utah Beach is excellent and good value. L’Auberge de Douve is near the house down by the river Douve and open April to September, serving fine home cooked Norman food. Limited menu but excellent quality. Hermitage in Carteret – very good fish restaurant by the harbour but slow service so allow time.
Croissants and Bread Croissants / small shop milk etc in next village Vindefontaine – go past church keeping to left of church – past Paulette’s house No: 6 on your left – and you will see sign and turn left along road to Vindefontaine. Cyclable or even walkable!
Beach The best beach in our view is at Carteret (approx 30 minutes). Go up the hill from the main town towards the lighthouse on the headland and turn right down towards a big bay. Park at the top and walk down to the beach from which you can see Jersey.
We have tried to arrive at a price that is fair and realistic for a well-equipped home of character that sleeps 12. But we have also taken into account the fact that it is not a fully modernised, pristine restoration; it is however comfortable, warm, dry and with all amenities. But for most people a little 18th century French character adds to the pleasure of the experience. We hope you agree.
