More about the area, the Creuse, Limousin The name Creuse refers to the French word for crease. Describing the effect the many river valleys have had upon the landscape, with many hills, deep cut river valleys, & lakes. Creuse is green & pleasant, with abundant wildlife attributable to less intensive farming, no large industry, few large towns and extensive areas of ancient forestry, predominantly oak & other native hard woods. The flora and fauna surprise many visitors, species of birds and animals rarely sighted elsewhere are almost common place. Large flocks of migrating birds can be seen and heard in the sky above the Creuse, going in one direction in the spring and reversing the process with the onset of winter. The area and geography is compared to Canada or referred to as the French Lake district. Many of the numerous rivers and lakes in the area are famous for the fishing they offer. In addition to abundant natural lakes throughout the region there are many Etang man made lakes used as nature reserves or fishing lakes.
