La Boufferie was part of a larger farm but is now a private residence with a land area of 5800 square metres. The meaning of La Boufferie is somewhat vague but we are assured by our French friends that it is slang for “the eating house”. The Gite comes fully equipped for your comfort while retaining old world charm, oak beams and original features. An ideal retreat to explore the Charente countryside, quiet and relaxing.
The Gite, which has its own private entrance, is the oldest part of La Boufferie and renovations have only recently been completed. The original oak beams and stone sink (where the woman of the house would prepare the rabbit or chicken for dinner) have been retained but we have added all the necessities of modern living for your comfort.
Downstairs the Gite consists of an open plan fitted kitchen and dining room with large refrigerator, full size gas cooker and microwave. There is a stone fireplace where visitors in the winter can sit around a roaring wood fire. Heat is also provided by central heating from the main house. The sitting room has a large leather three piece suit, a TV (Sky satellite free channels) and DVD player. There is a selection of books, games and DVD’s on the bookshelves under the stairs.
Upstairs the large landing has a radiator and is equipped with a couchette which is made private by the use of curtains. Once again the original oak beams have been retained. There are two bedrooms, a double and a single; both have new mattresses on the oak beds. The bedrooms have their own electric radiators and sleep three persons, the couchette would be suitable for another or perhaps a child. The bathroom has a marble wash stand with modern basin & taps, a full size shower and a toilet. It is fully tiled. Hot water is supplied from the main house.
The Gite opens directly onto our extensive gardens with many fruit trees, children’s play area, dining area with BBQ, wooded area and large parking area. A path through our small woods leads directly onto a track which can be followed into the small village of La Foret De Tesse (2Km). The nearest shop and restaurant are in the pretty little village of Montjean some 2.5Km to the North.
The Poitou-Charente region of France (area 16) boasts the second warmest climate in the whole of France. The area is rural, the main industry being agriculture. The countless fields of sunflowers with their dinner plate sized yellow flowers are known the world over as is the Cognac produced around the region of the same name only 30 minutes away. While you stay at La Boufferie we can arrange a visit to a local distillery where you can sample the 20 year old Cognac and perhaps buy a bottle to take home.
Swimming and fishing are available within 10 minutes drive
where there is a lake with a man made sandy beach. There is also the river Charente at Ruffec, 15 minutes drive, where you can relax and have a meal in the restaurant overlooking the river.
The beaches at Royan and La Rochelle are a 90 minute drive away on the exceptionally good French roads (it’s still a pleasure to drive here) and the zoo at La Palmyre has got to be one of the best in Europe, well worth a visit.
If it’s shopping you love then Angouleme to the south (40 minutes) has some superb shops and restaurants both in the beautiful town centre and the surrounding shopping malls. Poitiers is about the same distance, but to the north, again with good shopping and of course the famous Futuroscope science theme park. The major city of Bordeaux is within easy driving distance or you might like to take the high speed TGV train from Ruffec.
